The Oxford Microscopy Course (OxMiC)

The Oxford Light Microscopy Imaging Facilities invite you to take part in our Essentials of Light Microscopy Course held in the lecture theatre of the Richard Doll building (Churchill campus, Headington) on the 11th of July 2025  from 09:45 - 17:00.  This course brings together imaging experts and facility managers from all across Oxford and is an excellent way for any new starter to get to know the Light microscopy community in Oxford.

The course is suitable for all students, technicians, postdocs and other staff who require microscopy as part of their project/work and does not require any previous microscopy experience. However, more experienced microscopists and PI's may still find this useful, to learn more on experimental design, sample preparation, data storage and image analysis.

The in person OxMic Essentials of Light Microscopy Course will cover the following subjects:

  • Basics of light microscopy
  • Understanding the microscope body and objectives
  • Principles of widefield microscopy
  • Principles of confocal laser scanning microscopy
  • Principles of Spinning disc and light sheet microscopy
  • Comparision of super resolution techniques
  • Experimental design and which microscope to choose
  • Sample preparation
  • Data storage, metadata, scientific reporting & acknowledgements
  • Introduction to Image analysis, segmentation and co-localization

The short course is meant to provide a basic theoretical background for the everyday microscopy demands in Oxford's biomedical research institutes and connect you with imaging facilities near you.
